A House for Anna – Part 1

This time of year Atlanta can get the worst storms.  It starts out with a few rumbles quickly turning ito lightening, accompanied by powerful winds and always with the added excitement of hail.  When the weather begin to get hot, we get one of these storms at least three times a week.  Sometimes they last for a half an hour, sometimes they rage all night.  Most of the time, we hunker down indoors and watch the lighting through the windows.  Anna the cat, prefers to watch the storms a little bit closer.

She like to go outside in the morning and not return to dinner time, which means she is often outside during the storms if no one is home to let her in.  When the storm season arrived this year, Mike made a little shelter on the deck so she always had at least one dry spot.

Yeah.  The sad part is that it’s been like this for almost six months.

After the great refrigerator removal of ’11, I was cleaning up the garage when I saw the wood that we had removed from the deck to get the fridge out.

I bet there’s enough wood to make Anna a little box.  Wait a minute! I’ll make her a box with a planted roof.  What’s more environmentally friendly than reclaimed wood and a green roof? That’s right, nothing.

First you disassemble to wood after first checking to make sure that your tetanus vaccine is up to date.

Build a box.

Add a floor.

Add some legs and a decorative top.  Make sure to have the box tilted to provide drainage.

Throw on some deck stain and drainage holes.

Now take a break, have a drink, and watch your stain dry.

Have you had any bad storms lately?  Do you hide under the covers, or watch them through windows?
